RoadRunner Enhances Safety Through Embedded HTAWS and SVS, Modern EFIS Functionality, and NVIS Compatibility

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, March 1, 2016 – Astronautics Corporation of America is announcing a new Electronic Flight Instrument (EFI) for helicopters called RoadRunner.

Astronautics’ RoadRunner is a form-fit-function upgrade for helicopters that increases reliability and offers operators the choice of moving from electromechanical instruments and legacy EFIs to modern digital displays. The new EFI provides operators enhanced safety, decreased operating costs, weight reduction, and minimal downtime for installation.

RoadRunner expands flight safety capability with its internal Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS) and Synthetic Vision System (SVS), which provides a real-time, three-dimensional rendering of the terrain in front of the helicopter.

“Helicopter operators desire advanced functionality and high reliability, and do not want their helicopters down for months of installation. The RoadRunner Display System provides the safety functionality operators demand with a faster way to upgrade their existing EFIs. Upgrade may require nothing more than an adapter cable, allowing a very quick installation,” said Astronautics President Chad Cundiff.

“RoadRunner has the capability to load new software without removing the instrument and provides an easy, affordable path for future capabilities such as Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology.

RoadRunner allows helicopter operators to modernize legacy cockpits with enhanced functionality, increased situational awareness, improved reliability, and weight reduction,” added Cundiff.

Astronautics expects to receive Supplemental Type Certificate approval by the end of 2016 with deliveries to customers beginning shortly thereafter in order to fully comply with the HEMS mandate deadline of April 2017.

RoadRunner builds upon Astronautics’ history of providing the most reliable units in the industry, fully certified for the demanding helicopter environment.
